The Fishery

  • The Nelson Lakes Region and surrounding rivers is one of the world’s greatest freshwater fly fishing destinations. Abundant clear waters, rivers, streams, and alpine tarns are ripe for the fishing – you’ll run out of time long before you run out of water.

  • Tony Entwistle’s Nelson Lakes Guiding Services Ltd set the standard against which all other guides are measured and introduced the angling world to our area back in 1980. Strike Adventure Fishing continues in this proud tradition of professionalism and adventure. We know these waters intimately and have proved their worth over literally thousands of guide days across 3 decades.

  • We have great relationships with local landowners for access across private lands plus we are the only company to hold all the commercial access permits for the northern South Island – Department of Conservation administered lands, including National Parks and other Crown lands; Rainbow Station (above the Wash Bridge on the Wairau River, @60km of prime water); and also Molesworth Station (At 600,000 acres the largest and most historically significant station in NZ). If you plan fishing the Nelson Lakes area you’ll want to fish with us.

  • These streams, rivers, spring creeks and tarns fish well throughout the season and indeed there are always fishing options despite wind, rain or shine. There is no drought here and anglers will be amazed at the sheer amount of clear fishable water available from where we are based in the headwaters of the Buller, Wairau, and Motueka river systems. We fish to every point of the compass, including the renowned Motueka river, Owen river, Lake Rotoroa, and Murchison areas. There are also helicopter options into Kahurangi National Park and West Coast areas, among others. If there was better water available, we’d be fishing it.

  • Our quarry is Mr Brown Trout with most fish in the 3-6lb range caught on dry flies and nymphs, but we do catch many larger during the course of every season - especially in a northern South Island mouse year. The beech trees are again flowering right now (December 2009), so it’s another beech seed year this coming summer. Old timers claim heavy snowfalls in winter 2008 (the largest in living memory) and a smashed-down forest have stimulated the beech trees to go into reproductive over-drive which will make for great fishing, maybe the likes of which is seen only once in a blue moon.
